Aichi and Shizuoka manufacturing: where are shipments concentrated?

Aichi and Shizuoka ranked first and second in Japan for the value of manufactured goods shipments and related receipts in 2023. Both are manufacturing centres, but transport equipment accounts for more than half of Aichi's total, while electrical machinery and chemicals also hold substantial shares in Shizuoka.

Aichi first, Shizuoka second

In the 2024 Economic Structural Statistics survey of manufacturing establishments, the 2023 value of manufactured goods shipments and related receipts was ¥58.0218 trillion for Aichi and ¥19.7732 trillion for Shizuoka. Shizuoka Prefecture's data book ranks them first and second nationally on this measure.

The measure adds processing fees and other receipts to product shipments. Breaking that total down by industry shows where each prefecture's reported manufacturing value is concentrated.

Transport equipment makes up about 57% and 25.6%

Aichi reports ¥32.9087 trillion in transport equipment shipments and related receipts in 2023, about 57% of its manufacturing total. Shizuoka's 2026 industry data book reports ¥5.0619 trillion for the same industry and year, or 25.6% of its total. Transport equipment is much more dominant in Aichi's mix.

In Shizuoka, electrical machinery accounts for 14.3%, chemicals for 13.0% and food for 7.5%; reported value is spread across several industries. Aichi also has sizeable electrical machinery and steel sectors, worth ¥3.5915 trillion and ¥3.4203 trillion respectively. Its majority transport-equipment share does not erase those other kinds of manufacturing.

Shipment value and the number of workers

The same Shizuoka data book reports 845,283 manufacturing employees in Aichi and 408,750 in Shizuoka in 2024. These prefectural totals do not show how many people work in each industry.

Equipment, parts purchasing and product prices differ by industry, so a share of shipments need not match a share of jobs. Transport equipment's concentration helps describe the two manufacturing economies; industry-level employee counts are needed to see how employment is distributed.

How to read the evidence. Shipment values refer to 2023 and employee totals to 2024. The estimates cover establishments with at least one employee and exclude individually owned businesses. Shipments and related receipts do not directly measure value added, profit, residents' income or production capacity; shipment shares are not employment shares.
